Appleseeds Begins!

Thank you for visiting! This blog is to reflect on our weeks here together at Appleseeds Home Nursery. I am excited to see how the year unfolds with the changing of the seasons. I hope this blog gives the reader a better sense of what our day looks like and why I believe play is so crucial to child development.

Winter slush fun

We were given the fun opportunity to have a little snow and ice fun while it lasted. Because I know from my own experience that no matter where you sled in my front yard, you will inevitably end up hitting a garbage can, mailbox, or car, we just had fun pulling one another around the back play ground. The children also loved the new mix of snow in the sandbox and dug little slushy holes in it. Once the snow had melted, we had some very warm days and so we were actually able to break out the water for a bit and the children reinvigorated our mud kitchen area with pies and cakes.

On one of our warmest days, the children actually enjoyed helping me clean off the toy shelves and wash each toy before replacing it. It was busy work, but having our scrub brushes out and soapy water gave it an energizing purpose. Because of all my new fancy gutters (you noticed, right?), we have some extra drain pipes that they have repurposed in the sand box for construction and pond filling.

My story apron has become a winter scene for some winter seasonal stories. Last week, I told the story of Little Red Cap who woke up one morning and found that his friends were all off somewhere else. He has a happy little morning on his own and upon returning home finds a note from Jack Frost who has asked if he will take a magic paint brush and paint the forest with frost. Little Red Cap happily paints all night, covering the land with lacy frost.

Our most recent story was about the Valentine Baker of Pink who bakes heart shaped cakes each Valentine's day filled with love, so that everyone who eats them feels happy and loved. A king brings his solemn and unhappy princess to see if the cake will work for her, and it does! She is filled with joy and of course marries the baker and joins him in baking heart cakes in his village of Pink.

We became bakers ourselves, of sorts, when I brought out some lavender scented play dough. The children enjoyed cutting hearts out of it and making little heart shaped mandalas using beads and sequins.
